Courts around the world are now dealing with something new. Legal submissions containing case citations that do not exist, generated by AI tools and filed without verification.
The technology is not going away, and the profession is still working out where responsibility sits. With the lawyer who filed it? The firm that permitted the tool? The court that did not catch it?
Dr Andreas Karsten, Assistant Professor of Law at City University Qatar, examines what professional accountability looks like when AI enters legal practice, and what duties officers of the court carry in a digital age.

Why language models fabricate citations, and why the output looks entirely credible when they do.

Existing professional duties, and how they apply to work produced with AI assistance.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr Andreas Karsten
Assistant Professor of Law, City University Qatar
Dr Andreas holds an LLD, an LLM in Tax Law, and an HDip in Tax Law. His research, development, and innovation interests include anti-corruption law, tax law, public fiscal accountability, international commercial and trade regulation, development and planning law, and environmental governance and accountability. His international research collaborations include participation in a Safe and Sustainable Cities project between North-West University and Humboldt University of Berlin, as well as serving as a researcher on the RPAFD–Royal Holloway, University of London project on public authorities and financial distress.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Lawyers, in-house counsel, compliance and risk professionals, legal academics and students, and anyone whose work involves legal process or documentation.
No legal background is required. The session is built to be accessible to non-specialists while remaining substantive for practitioners.
